DRC: at least 49 people dead in a wreck on the Congo River in the north-west of the country
KINSHASA May 25, (Newsnetwork) – at least 49 people died in a whaling shipwreck on Wednesday night on the River Congo to Mbandaka, according to Tshuapa Province, Deputy Governor Mboyo Iluka
According to Mr. Mboyo Iluka, the whaling boat that left the village of Monkoto to Mbandaka sank in the night 1 km from Wafania in the province of Tshuapa. For the moment, the causes of this accident remain unknown.
According to local sources, a team consisting of the provincial Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, division chiefs, but also provincial deputies was sent to the scene of the tragedy to inquire about the situation.
Accidents on the rivers Congo are very frequent following the bad conditions of the boats. The nuggets of the passengers in the boats are also at the base of the multiple causes of the accidents, according to the authorities.
